Bi-State Compact is Unique
Over the last 50 years, our enjoyment of this amazing environment has caused changes in the ecosystem and created an altered watershed.
In an effort to prevent further and continued degradation, the states of California and Nevada created the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) in 1969 to help protect Lake Tahoe for generations to come. The TRPA is charged with attaining and maintaining environmental threshold carrying capacities for the Tahoe Basin.
The Bi-State Compact establishing the TRPA was ratified by the United States Congress and the federal government continues to play an active role in the preservation of the Lake environment. Given that approximately 80 percent of the land within the Tahoe Basin is managed by the USDA Forest Service, and another five percent by state agencies, the partnership between the TRPA and federal and state stakeholders is extensive.
This collaboration is most evident in the Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program (EIP). The EIP is one of the primary strategies involved in achieving environmental thresholds and is a public private partnership that rivals some of the largest collaborative restoration initiatives in the United States.
At the heart of the Lake Tahoe EIP lies the teamwork of more than 50 public and private organizations. The tremendous financial support from the federal government, the states of California and Nevada, local jurisdictions in the Tahoe Basin, and private homeowners and businesses make the EIP possible. This report will highlight the progress made on the EIP over the last 10 years.
