Abstract
:
We will use a research-management partnership of research stations and national forests to develop the decision support needed by the US Forest Service to incorporate climate change into management and planning in the western US. Scientific information and decision support will be documented in peer reviewed literature and communicated through training, common-language publications, and a web-based portal. In addition, we will collaborate with NPS and USGS to address common interests in climate-change adaptation and validate decision-support tools across diverse landscapes and management objectives. We address four tasks: (1) Develop adaptation management resource materials in multiple formats. We will synthesize key information from SAP 4.4 Report “Adaptation Options for Climate-Sensitive Ecosystems” and communicate it in a format accessible to resource managers. We will also work with NPS and USGS to develop an adaptation guidebook with a portfolio of adaptation options for federal lands. (2) Conduct replicate case studies on three national forests to develop and evaluate decision support for adaptation to climate change. We will work with managers on the Olympic, Shoshone, and Tahoe National Forests to transfer conceptual approaches to real landscapes. On each forest we will develop and test (1) a rapid-audit tool to screen projects for consistency with climate-change adaptation options, (2) an approach for evaluating compatibility of management strategies with adaptation, and (3) a process for addressing uncertainty and risk in national forest projects. (3) Extend case-study results for broader applications across diverse landscapes and ownerships. Using results from Task 2, we will convene workshops to evaluate and revise decision-support methods with managers, planners, and line officers from federal and state land management agencies, and private landowners. (4) Intensively develop the USFS Climate Change Resource Center (CCRC) website. The CCRC will be the main portal for Western national forest managers seeking information on climate-change adaptation. This project will provide new climate-capable strategies, procedures, and collaborations that will facilitate adaptation to changing climates by the USFS and partner agencies.
